Highlawn Inn History

Built as Highlawn in the late 1890s by the Honorable Algernon R. Unger for his bride Chaffie Ziler. Unger served in the WV Legislature and built the landmark Washington Hotel in Berkeley Springs, destroyed by fire in 1974. After his death, Unger's widow operated Highlawn as a boarding house to provide accommodations for people passing through town or staying to visit.

The current owners bought the building in 1984 to operate as the Highlawn Inn, meticulously restoring its original elegance. The Inn is located in a district near other historic sites such as the Berkeley Castle and The Museum of the Berkeley Springs.

Highlawn Inn is a member of West Virginia Historic Inns and is featured in:

  • America's Wonderful Little Hotels and Inns
