What the Press Say About Highlawn Inn
What will you find when you travel to Highlawn Inn for a weekend getaway? We think you'll find beautifully appointed luxury accommodations and deliciously decadent breakfasts to satisfy your senses. But don't just take our word for it No place better! Highlawn Inn--great beds, even better breakfasts. The Inn (particularly your front porch) was so enchanting it put me at complete ease while working--not an easy feat, I assure you. As for your cooking, well, let's just say I wish I could have it as good at the restaurants I eat in. In Highlawn's parlor you can idle over a cup of tea and thumb through a local history book or spend a lazy morning at breakfast. Sandra's dishes form aromatic visuals. Her feather-light biscuits, spicy country sausage, vegetable-laden omelets, and dessert cakes are deliciously abundant. Upon the antique buffet a hot pot of coffee sites. Time stops. Outside Jackie, the cat, darts off in pursuit of vanishing prey.
Also worth a visit is the Highlawn Inn, a marvelous creaky 1897 Victorian with a wraparound porch and a commanding view of the town. Innkeeper Sandra Kauffman also offers catered dinners. One of the best views in town can be captured from the Highlawn Inn, a charming Victorian bed and breakfast which provides one of the most opulent breakfasts any health seeker could hope for. Innkeeper Sandra Kauffman loves her kitchen and makes magic there with such ethereally light scrambled eggs (she wouldn't divulge her secret recipe), crisp bacon, dilled potatoes, homemade fresh croissants, fresh squeezed orange juice (she uses the orange peel to make her own coffee blend), and a potpourri of other specialties.
"It was undoubtedly the best night's sleep I've had in a long time," is a comment Sandra Kauffman has often heard during her nine years as an innkeeper. The six-room Victorian built in the late 1890s has more charm than it knows what to do with. Sandy and Tim do all the cooking, leading you to think they were professional gourmet chefs in their former lives. Following breakfast I was treated to a kiss from Jackey, one of the four cats that patrol the premises and see to the needs of guests who might want some fur to stroke Our choice was the Highlawn Inn, a rambling 1897 Victorian perched on a steep hillside overlooking the town. The Highlawn has all the charm one would expect, plus many amenities not often found in b&bs. We went back to Highlawn to enjoy the spring water in our own private whirlpool tub. After a good night's sleep, we were treated to one of Kauffman's scrumptious breakfasts. Everyone was home-baked--even her croissants. Even the most aloof can't help but fall in love again staring into the eyes of their mate over a Victorian-style dinner at Highlawn Inn atop a steep Berkeley Springs hill. Highlawn Inn--an elegant, turn-of-the-century house in Berkeley Springs, Highlawn takes guests beyond simple relaxation to murder mystery weekends, Thanksgiving and Christmas getaways and wine tasting extravaganzas. Innkeeper Sandra Kauffman will also suggest nearby trips to the mineral baths, Cacapon State Park and Berkeley Castle. The Carriage House is a beautiful and comfortable space -- "commodious" is a good Victorian era word for it. I enjoyed being there, and the breakfast was superb.
